Chinese Language Requirement
Level 3 or above in Chinese Language in the HKDSE

For Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) students fulfilling the specified conditions in Note 1, the University will accept the following alternative Chinese Language qualifications as equivalent to Level 3 of HKDSE Chinese Language:

(i) Grade E or above in GCE AS-Level or A-Level Chinese; or
(ii) Grade C/Grade 4 or above in GCSE/IGCSE/GCE O-Level Chinese/Chinese Language; or
(iii) "Attained" in Applied Learning Chinese (ApL(C)); or
(iv) Other HKDSE equivalent Chinese Language qualifications deemed acceptable by the University.

HKDSE Category C subjects (Other Languages) normally cannot be used for meeting the entrance requirement on Chinese Language. While waivers may be granted at the discretion of individual programmes, such consideration is only made under special circumstances, on a case-by-case basis. Students are therefore strongly advised to obtain the requisite Chinese Language qualifications.

Note 1
The specified conditions are:

(i) The student has learned Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education. This caters specifically to students who have a late start in learning of Chinese Language (e.g. due to their settlement in Hong Kong well past the entry level) or who have been educated in Hong Kong sporadically; or
(ii) The student has learned Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but has been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in our local schools.

On an exceptional basis, students who have pursued a school curriculum (locally or overseas) that does not include formal Chinese language studies may be admitted to certain programmes of study in which written Chinese is not an essential element. For such students, the language requirement for Chinese is substituted by an alternative language (other than Chinese or English).

For admission to the University, applicants are required to fulfill both the University and programme entrance requirements. For details of prevailing University and programme entrance requirements, please visit the website of the Admissions Office: http://admissions.hkbu.edu.hk/

5. Handling of Exceptional Admission Cases

Deans/Director of Faculties# should seek the approval from President and Vice-Chancellor (PVC)/Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) (VPTL) via the Academic Registrar while handling the exceptional admission cases (those who fail to meet the minimum entrance requirements stipulated by the University but excel in other academic/non-academic aspects). PVC/VPTL will make the final executive decision to admit those special cases on exceptional basis.

Special consideration for JUPAS applicants who fail to meet the general entrance requirements
JUPAS Band A applicants who fail to meet the general entrance requirements by one level in any one of the HKDSE core subjects, but obtain a total of two *s (either one subject with 5** or 2 subjects with 5*) or above in any subject(s) may also be considered for admission.
