Taught Postgraduate Programmes Admission Requirements


Doctor of Business Administration

Applicants seeking admission to the DBA degree programme should possess:

  1. An MBA or a master’s degree in business-related subjects from a recognised university or equivalent;
  2. Substantial years (normally 10 years or above) of managerial or professional experience at an appropriate level; and
  3. Proficiency in English language, such as completion of a degree programme taught in English. For those who did not graduate from an English-speaking programme, a TOEFL score of 550 or above for the paper-based test, 79 or above for the Internet-based test, or an IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent score on a comparable test) is required.

Applicants must submit a statement of purpose of 2,000 to 3,000 words, stating the interested area of research, as part of the selection process.

Contact information of two referees who are in the position to give comment on the applicant’s professional work and suitability for the programme. 

All short-listed applicants will be required to attend a panel interview conducted in English as part of the selection process.


Doctor of Education

Applicants seeking admission to the Doctor of Education programme should:

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree; or a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours; and
  2. Demonstrate a record of at least 4 years of professional experience in the education sector or other relevant sectors as deemed appropriate by the Department.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s and master's degrees were obtained from institutions outside Hong Kong where the medium of instruction is not English. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

A score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.


Master of Accountancy

Applicants seeking admission to the MAcc programme should possess:

  1. A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution; or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Notes for applicants:

  1. Applicants bear the responsibility to confirm with HKICPA that their Bachelor’s degrees are recognised in meeting the student registration requirements of the HKICPA QP before applying for admission to the MAcc programme.
  2. Applicants expecting the acquisition of the requisite academic qualification before the programme commencement may also apply for admission.
  3. Both business and non-business degree holders must satisfy the pre-core programme requirements prior to their completion of the MAcc programme. The pre-core programme includes courses on Accounting, Economics, Information Systems, Management and Statistics. Applicants should have demonstrated in their official academic transcripts that they possess fundamental knowledge in these areas. Students may also satisfy the pre-core programme requirements by taking equivalent courses in other recognised programmes. Applicants with deficiencies in any of these courses must take, at their extra cost, the prescribed pre-core courses (which are non-unit bearing courses with pass/fail option) to satisfy the competency requirements for admission to the HKICPA QP. The offering of pre-core courses by the Department is subject to the demand of the admissions.

Selection will primarily be based on the results stated in official academic transcripts and supporting documents. However, interviews may be arranged to further assess applicants’ qualifications.

Applicants whose Bachelor's degrees are obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfil the following minimum English Proficiency requirement:

  1. A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test); or
  2. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS).


Master of Arts in Chinese Literature, Language and Culture

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Chinese Literature, Language and Culture degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor's degree with second class honours or above in Chinese or related disciplines (mass media, humanities, cultural studies and education) from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
  2. A general degree plus relevant working experience; or
  3. An equivalent qualification.

Short-listed applicants may be interviewed should the Programme Board deem it necessary.


Master of Arts in Communication

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Communication degree programme should possess a bachelor’s degree with honours from a recognised university or comparable institution. Relevant professional experience will be favourably considered. Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should possess a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test), or an overall band 6.5 in IELTS.

The English proficiency requirement is not applicable to the offshore programme offered in Mainland.

Applicants should submit a 500-word essay in English outlining the applicant’s academic interests and objectives, and a sample of publication or research paper written by the applicant, if any. Short-listed applicants may be selectively interviewed.


Master of Arts in Ethics and Public Affairs

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Ethics and Public Affairs degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor's degrees were obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. A score of 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based test) in TOEFL; or
  2. An overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS; or
  3. A score of 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of China.

Short-listed applicants may be interviewed should the Programme Board deem it necessary.


Master of Arts in Global Society

Applicants seeking admission to the programme should possess a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or comparable institution, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent.  Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose first degree is obtained from non-English medium institutions.  These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency: 

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  2. A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
  3. A score of 480 in College English Test band 6 (CET-6).


Master of Arts in International Journalism Studies

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in International Journalism Studies degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
  2. At least seven years’ experience as a journalist or in another related profession that, in the view of the Department, constitutes a level equivalent to a first degree in courses relevant to the MA programme, and must show evidence of academic aptitude and achievement; and
  3. Ability to communicate in English at an advanced level. Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should possess a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or an overall band score of 6.5 in IELTS. 

Applicants should submit a 500-word self-statement in English outlining their academic interests and objectives, or a sample of a piece of journalism or research paper or similar work written by the applicant in English.

Short-listed applicants will be interviewed.


Master of Arts in Language Studies

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Language Studies (MALS) degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Applicants are expected to have advanced competence in spoken and written English. If English was not the medium of instruction in their first degree, applicants are required to provide evidence of good English proficiency.  At least one of the following minimum scores or standards has been achieved:

  1. IELTS (Academic): Overall Band at 6.5; or
  2. TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based), 79 (Internet-based); or
  3. CET-6 (College English Test band 6): 500; or
  4. Grade D in AS Use of English (HKALE); or
  5. Level 4 in English Language (HKDSE).

Mature students and other candidates who lack the above qualifications may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. The courses on offer are available to external students from other universities.


Master of Arts in Literary and Comparative Studies

Applicants applying to the programme should hold a bachelor’s degree (BA) from a recognised university or comparable institution; or a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Applicants may be interviewed in order to elicit further information such as interests, motivation, communication skills, language proficiency, maturity and suitability.

Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should:

  1. Achieve at least one of the following minimum scores or standards:
    (i) A score of 6.5 in IELTS;
    (ii) A TOEFL iBT (internet-based testing) score of 79 or PBT (Paper-based/delivered 
          Test) of 550;
    (iii) A score of 500 in CET6;
    (iv) Grade D in AS Use of English (HKALE); OR
    (v) Level 4 in English Language (HKDSE).
  2. Be able to communicate in English at an advanced level.


Master of Arts in Music

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Music programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in music with at least second class honours from a recognised university or comparable institution; or
  2. Qualifications deemed to be equivalent.

Non-local applicants whose bachelor's degree was awarded by an institution/university where the medium of instruction was not English, are required to fulfil the English Language Requirements of an overall band score of 6 or above in IELTS, or 74 (Internet-based)/537 (paper-based) in TOEFL.


Master of Arts in Producing for Film, Television and New Media

Applicants applying to the programme should hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university or comparable institution.

Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  1. TOEFL score of 550 (for paper-based test) or 79 (for Internet-based test); or
  2. Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Applicants should submit:

  1. A 500-word paper outlining the applicant’s interests, and present knowledge/understanding of the field of study;
  2. If and where relevant, an example of the applicant’s publications or other documented research output, if any.


Master of Arts in Translation and Bilingual Communication

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Translation and Bilingual Communication degree programme should:

  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent professional qualification;
  2. Be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications:
    (i) Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or
    (ii) Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or
    (iii) A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
    (iv) An overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS; or
    (v) CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above; and
  3. Be able to communicate in Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in Chinese such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications:
    (i) Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture (HKALE); or
    (ii) A BA degree with Chinese as the medium of instruction.

Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview.

Applicants should submit two 300-word self-statements, one in English and one in Chinese, outlining the applicant's academic interests and objectives.


Master of Arts in Visual Arts

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Visual Arts programme should possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Applicants should have relevant experience in respective studio practice. A portfolio of past works (5-10 images of original artworks in digital format or photographs) has to be submitted with the application.

Applicants have to declare their intended concentration (SMA or CD) as well as to submit a study proposal for the SMA/CD Studio Project as part of the admission exercise. They will be interviewed to assess their background knowledge, experience, commitment as well as their capability and suitability for the programme.

Applicants are expected to be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, meeting one or more of the following qualifications:

  1. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification earned from an English-medium institution; or
  2. A band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS; or
  3. TOEFL scores of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
  4. CET-6 (College English Test band 6): 450.


Master of Business Administration

Applicants seeking admission to the MBA degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) from a recognised university or comparable institution, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent;
  2. At least three years of relevant work experience;
  3. An acceptable score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)*; and
  4. A satisfactory performance in the admission interview.

Since English is the medium of instruction and that some China business-related courses may be taught in Chinese, applicants should possess both a good command of English and a working level of Chinese.

For MBA Hong Kong class, if English was not the medium of instruction for the first degree, applicants are required to provide evidence of good English proficiency, e.g. English standard with a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based)/79 (Internet-based) or IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or qualifications deemed to be equivalent. The English proficiency requirement is not applicable to the offshore programme offered in Mainland.

The Admission Panel will assess appropriately qualified applicants’ motivation, maturity, communication skills, language proficiency, and suitability for the programme at interview. The interview will be group-based and interactive.

* Applicants with eight or more years of relevant work experience may apply for exemption from taking GMAT.


Master of Chinese Medicine

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Chinese Medicine degree programme should:

  1. Be holders of the bachelor of Chinese Medicine or Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine degree; or
  2. Possess equivalent qualifications in Chinese medicine or Chinese pharmacy; or
  3. Be registered Chinese medicine practitioners in Hong Kong who have passed the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination; or
  4. Be registered Chinese medicine practitioners in Hong Kong with provision of training certificate in Chinese medicine or relevant disciplines and passed the admission assessment to be conducted by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU.

Applicants with qualifications listed in 2, 3 or 4 above may be required to pass an assessment conducted by the Programme Management Committee.

Language requirements: Applicants must have (a) obtained Grade E or above in Chinese Language and Culture in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, or (b) obtained a bachelor’s degree with Chinese language as the primary medium of instruction in the major courses, or (c) passed the Chinese language test arranged by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU.


Master of Education

Applicants seeking admission to the MEd degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent; and
  2. A postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent, and/or relevant professional experience working with children and adolescents.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s degrees were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

For applicants applying for the English Language Teaching (ELT) Concentration:

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent

For applicants applying for non-ELT Concentrations:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent


Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media

Applicants seeking admission to the MFA in Film, Television and Digital Media degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university;
  2. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (for paper-based examination) or 79 (for Internet-based examination), or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 as an alternative to the TOEFL score*; and
  3. Strong evidence of academic aptitude and strong interest in creative activities.

* (i) This requirement is only applicable to students originating from countries/institutions where English is not the major medium of instruction.
(ii) Students with relevant talent but a lower English standard (i.e. an IELTS band score of 6.0 or equivalent) would be considered for admission on the condition that the students have to satisfactorily complete an English enhancement course arranged by the programme.


Master of Human Resources Management

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Human Resources Management degree programme should normally possess:

  1. A recognised bachelor’s degree or an equivalent professional qualification (with no work experience requirement); or
  2. A recognised diploma plus a minimum of four years of work experience; AND
  3. English language proficiency requirement applies for applicants who received their higher education in a language other than English:
    (i) TOEFL: not lower than 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
    (ii) IELTS: overall band score not lower than 6.5; or
    (iii) CET-6: not lower than a score of 450; or
    (iv) Other equivalent qualifications.

Shortlisted candidates are invited to attend an interview.


Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chinese Medicine

Applicants seeking admission to the MPharmSc in Chinese Medicine degree programme should be:

  1. Holders of a bachelor of Chinese Medicine or Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine degree; or
  2. Holders of a non-Chinese Medicine degree, but with qualifications equivalent to the above, e.g. applicants with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Science or Medicine; or
  3. Pharmacists or registered Chinese Medicine practitioners of Hong Kong; or
  4. Graduates of Professional Diploma of Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine or programmes of similar nature, who have more than three years of relevant work experience.

Applicants with qualifications listed in 2, 3 or 4 above may be required to pass an assessment conducted by the Programme Management Committee.

Language requirements: Applicants must have (a) obtained Grade E or above in Chinese Language and Culture in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, or (b) obtained a bachelor’s degree with Chinese language as the primary medium of instruction in the major courses, or (c) passed the Chinese language test arranged by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU.


Master of Public Administration

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Public Administration degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) from a recognised university or comparable institution, or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Qualified applicants will be interviewed to assess their motivation and suitability for the programme.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose first degree is obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  2. A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test); or
  3. A score of 450 in College English Test band 6 (CET-6), or a pass in the old version of CET-6.


Master of Science in Advanced Information Systems

Applicants should normally:

  1. Possess a bachelor's degree in science, engineering, IT or relevant fields from a recognised university or equivalent qualification; and
  2. If applicants did not use English as the medium of learning in their bachelor's degree programmes, they should satisfy any one of the following English proficiency requirements:
    (i) IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0;
    (ii) TOEFL score of at least 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based);
    (iii) Other equivalent qualifications (e.g. CET-6 score of at least 450).

For exceptional cases in which applicants have other qualifications but substantial experience in IT, applicants' suitability will be determined with reference to individual merits and interviews.


Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Analytical Chemistry degree programme should:

  1. Possess a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with honours in Chemistry or in Physical and Life Sciences, such as Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Food Science, Pharmacology, etc. where a strong emphasis is placed on analytical techniques and measurements from a recognised university or comparable institution; or a qualification deemed to be equivalent.
  2. Fulfil any one of the following English requirements:
    (i) TOEFL: 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based);
    (ii) IELTS (academic): overall band of 6.5;
    (iii) CET-6 (College English Test band 6): 450;
    (iv) Applicants who had successfully graduated from a bachelor's degree programme that adopts English as the medium of instruction.

Applicants who do not possess a formal degree qualification but have substantial documented relevant work experience in Analytical Chemistry may be considered. Applicants will be interviewed to determine their suitability for studying the programme.

Applicants with an IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent, may also apply, and will be required to satisfactorily complete an English enhancement course offered by the University if admitted.


Master of Science in Applied Accounting and Finance

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Applied Accounting and Finance degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree with honours in Business from a recognised university or comparable institution, or a professional qualification deemed to be equivalent (e.g. a professional qualification in accounting or finance field such as CPA/ACCA from designated accounting bodies, CFA from Institute of Certified Financial Analysts, CMA from Institute of Management Accountants, etc.); or
  2. A bachelor’s degree in other disciplines with relevant experience and/or training in Accounting, Finance, Management or related fields; and
  3. A satisfactory score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (for applicants of full-time programme only); or
  4. A minimum of three years of relevant working experience (for applicants of part-time programme only); and
  5. Proof of English proficiency* for applicants whose first degrees were obtained from non-English-medium institutions. A minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 or TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or the equivalent score of other tests.

Qualified applicants will be required to attend an admission interview as part of the selection process.

Students with non-Business degrees who lack basic training/experience in Accounting, Finance or related fields may also be qualified, subject to making up of the accounting and finance fundamentals through an intensive foundation course at extra cost or the guided self-study before the commencement of the MScAAF programme.

* Not applicable to the offshore programme offered in Mainland


Master of Science in Applied Economics

The overall scholastic records and potential of the applicant for admission are more important than prior preparation in specific areas of economics. While undergraduate specialisation in economics is desirable, the programme is open to students whose undergraduate degree has been in other fields.

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Applied Economics degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or equivalent. Although a bachelor degree in economics or related areas is not a pre-requisite for admission, the applicant is expected to possess the knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics, with some training in mathematics (especially in calculus and linear algebra) and statistics.
  2. Proof of English proficiency (for applicants whose first degree was obtained from non-English-medium institutions). This can be fulfilled by obtaining a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (Internet-based test), a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS; or other equivalent qualifications.


Master of Science in Business Management

The entry requirements for the MScBM Programme are a combination of the following:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution; or a professional qualification deemed to be equivalent;
  2. Good English proficiency *R1;
  3. A satisfactory performance in the selection interview *R2; and
  4. GMAT is not required but highly encouraged.

* Remarks:

R1: Since English is the medium of instruction, applicants should possess a good command of English, both written and spoken. If English was not the medium of instruction for the first degree, applicants are required to provide evidence of good English proficiency, e.g. English standard with a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based)/79 (Internet-based) or IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or equivalent qualifications.
R2: The Admission Panel will assess the motivation, maturity, communication skills, language proficiency, and suitability of the applicants for the programme at the interview. The interview will be group-based and interactive. A Programme-administered written test on English proficiency will be conducted prior to the interview.

Applicants should also submit a personal statement of not more than 500 words on their motivation to study the programme, as part of the application materials.


Master of Science in Corporate Governance and Compliance

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Corporate Governance and Compliance degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university or comparable institution, or an equivalent qualification (such as recognised professional qualification in accounting or finance);
  2. A minimum of three years of relevant work experience is preferred; and
  3. Evidence of good English proficiency if English was not the medium of instruction for undergraduate studies: a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 79 (Internet-based)/IELTS (academic) overall band score of 6.5/an equivalent score on a comparable test.


Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Global Marketing

Applicants would need a bachelor degree in any discipline with good grade average (e.g. cGPA 3.0 or above or equivalent) from a recognised university or comparable institution. GMAT and French language are not required for this programme.

For non-English native applicants, you need to meet the English requirement as stipulated below:

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, with not less than 6 in each component test; or
  2. TOEFL: IBT: 94 (minimum score of 22 in each band); paper-based: 587 (institutional/ITP TOEFL results will not be accepted); or
  3. Cambridge Proficiency Exam: A, B or C; or
  4. Pearson Test of English (PTE): a minimum of 63.


Master of Science in Environmental and Public Health Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Environmental and Public Health Management degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or comparable institution in any discipline; or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Applicants such as higher diploma holders, but have substantial documented relevant work experience in environmental management (normally five years or above) may be considered.

If the medium of instruction for the undergraduate study of the applicant is not English, then the applicant is expected to demonstrate his/her English proficiency by fulfilling either one of the following:

  1. TOFEL score of a least 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based);
  2. IELTS score of at least 6.5 (academic); or
  3. A new College English Test (CET-6) of China score of at least 450.

Applicants with an IELTS score of 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based) or equivalent may also apply, and will be required to satisfactorily complete an English enhancement course offered by the University if admitted.


Master of Science in Food Analysis and Food Safety Management

Applicants applying to the programme should:

  1. Possess a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university or equivalent qualification in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science and Medical Science. Holders of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in other Physical and Life Sciences, where relevant background in biology and chemistry are provided or with an additional one year of relevant working experience will also be considered.
  2. Fulfil any one of the following English requirements:
    (i) TOEFL: score of 550 (paper-based), 79 (Internet-based);
    (ii) IELTS (academic): overall band at 6.5;
    (iii) CET-6 (College English Test band 6): score of 450; or a pass in CET 6 for the old version of CET;
    (iv) having successfully graduated from a bachelor's degree programme that adopts English as the medium of instruction.

Applicants with an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent may also apply, and will be required to complete an English enhancement course offered by the University if admitted. 


Master of Science in Global Marketing Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Global Marketing programme:

  1. Would need a good degree in any subject (an upper second class (2:1) honours or higher; or equivalent) or approved professional qualification combined with a desire to learn about principles and practices of marketing. Applicants do not need prior marketing or management experience.
  2. English Language Requirements
    Applicants who are nationals (or university graduates) of a majority native English speaking country do not need to complete a specific English language qualification.

IELTS is our preferred test of language.  You need at least an IELTS overall band score of 6.5 or equivalent, but 7.0 with at least 6 in all the component tests is desirable.  If you are unable to sit the IELTS, you should take TOEFL.  If you take TOEFL, please note that the Internet-based test (iBT) is the only TOEFL qualification that we accept.

Master of Science in Green Technology (Energy)

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Green Technology (Energy) degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or recognised institution of higher studies, preference will be given to holders of degrees in science or engineering; or
  2. A professional qualification equivalent to tertiary academic level, from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, a member institute in the British Engineering Council, etc.

Work experience is an advantage but not essential.

Non-local candidates from an institution where medium of instruction is not English have to satisfy any one of the followings:

  1. A minimum TOEFL score of 537 (paper-based test) or 74 (Internet-based test); or
  2. An overall band score of 6.0 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  3. A score of 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of China.


Master of Science in Information Technology Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Information Technology Management degree programme should normally:

  1. Possess a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business or other relevant fields from a recognised university or comparable institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent; and
  2. If applicants did not use English as the medium of learning in their bachelor's degree programmes, they should satisfy any one of the following English proficiency requirements:
    (i) IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0;
    (ii) TOEFL score of at least 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based);
    (iii) Other equivalent qualifications (e.g. CET-6 score of at least 450).

Applicants having other qualifications and substantial experience in Information Technology will also be considered. Applicants may be interviewed to determine their suitability for studying the programme.


Master of Science in Mathematical Finance

Applicants should:

  1. Possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Business or other related majors;
  2. Be proficient in basic Mathematics; and
  3. Satisfy at least one of the following requirements on English language proficiency:
    (i) Applicants used English as the medium of learning in their Bachelor's degree programme;
    (ii) A score of 6.5 or above in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
    (iii) Equivalent qualifications.

Note: TOEFL is not accepted as a proof of English language proficiency.


Master of Science in Operational Research and Business Statistics

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Operational Research and Business Statistics degree programme should normally possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Business or other related majors; and
  2. Proficiency in basic mathematics; and
  3. At least one of the following requirements on English language proficiency*:
    (i) English as the medium of learning in bachelor’s degree programme;
    (ii) A score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or above in TOEFL;
    (iii) An overall IELTS score of 6.0 and a minimum of 6.5 or above in the sub-test of reading or listening; or
    (iv) Equivalent qualifications.

* Students who marginally fulfil the English requirements may be requested to complete additional English remedial course(s).  The cost is to be borne by the students.

Master of Science in Personal Health Management (Chinese Medicine) 

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Science in Personal Health Management (Chinese Medicine) degree programme should be:

  1. Holders of good bachelor’s degree and the Hong Kong registered healthcare personnel’s; or
  2. Holders of a good bachelor’s degree in other disciplines from a recognised university; or
  3. Holders of a good bachelor’s degree of Chinese medicine or pharmacy in Chinese medicine from a recognised university; or
  4. Registered Chinese medicine practitioners in Hong Kong, who have passed the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination.

Applicants must have

  1. Obtained a bachelor’s degree with Chinese language as the primary medium of instruction in the major courses; or
  2. Obtained Grade E or above in Chinese Language and Culture in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE); or
  3. Obtained Level 3 in Chinese Language in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE); or
  4. Passed the Chinese language test arranged by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU. 


Master of Science in Strategic Human Resources Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Strategic Human Resources Management degree programme should possess:

  1. A good first degree or equivalent, in any discipline, from a recognised university; or
  2. A Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management from a recognised education institution; or
  3. A qualification deemed to be equivalent; AND
  4. Usually a minimum of five years of management/professional experience.

Applicants graduated from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English must achieve the following English proficiency requirement:

  1. TOEFL: normally not lower than 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
  2. IELTS: normally overall band score not lower than 6.5; or
  3. CET-6: normally not lower than a score of 450; or
  4. Other equivalent qualifications.

Master of Social Sciences (Contemporary China Studies)

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc (Contemporary China Studies) degree programme:

  1. Should hold a bachelor’s degree, or qualification of equivalent standard from another university or comparable institution;
  2. If shortlisted, may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process; and
  3. Will be given preference with background in social sciences and/or humanities; and
  4. Should meet the English proficiency requirement. Applicants should have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English-speaking country; or submit one of the following original score reports/certificates for assessment:
    (i) TOEFL minimum score: 550 (paper-based) or 79 (Internet-based); or
    (ii) IELTS (academic): band score of 6.5 or above; or
    (iii) College English Test (CET 6): 450 or above.


Master of Social Sciences in Counselling

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Counselling degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent;
  2. Preferably with relevant experience of working with people in related fields; and
  3. Some background knowledge in psychology, human development, guidance, and/or other related courses.

Qualified applicants will be interviewed to ensure their motivation and suitability for pursuing training in counselling.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose Bachelor's/Master's degrees are obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  2. A score of 537 (paper-based test) or 74 (Internet-based test) in TOEFL; or
  3. An equivalent score on a comparable test.


Master of Social Sciences in Media Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Media Management degree programme should possess a bachelor’s degree with honours from a recognised university or comparable institution. Professional experience would be preferred. Applicants whose first degree is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should possess a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test), or an overall band 6.5 in IELTS.

Applicants should submit a 500-word essay in English outlining the applicant’s academic interests and objectives, and a sample of publication or research paper written by the applicant, if any. Short-listed applicants may be selectively interviewed.

Master of Social Sciences in Social Work

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Social Work degree programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university; or
  2. A qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Priority will be given to applicants with RSW qualification (registered on the basis of a recognised social work diploma) or with social sciences background at undergraduate level.

Qualified applicants will be interviewed to establish proper motivation and suitability for pursuing a qualifying social work programme in a reflective and learner-centred environment.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose Bachelor's/Master's degrees are obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or

Master of Social Sciences in Sport and Leisure Management

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Sport and Leisure Management degree programme should possess:

A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised university. Priority will be given to applicants who have related majors (e.g. physical education, sport/exercise science, sport/recreation/ leisure management) or relevant work experiences.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose first degree is obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. A score of 537 (paper-based test) with a minimum score of 4.0 for writing section or 74 (Internet-based test) with a minimum score of 21 for writing section in TOEFL; or
  2. An overall band score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 for writing section and 5.5 for other sections in IELTS; or
  3. An equivalent qualification.


Master of Social Work

Applicants seeking admission to the MSW degree programme should possess a bachelor’s degree in Social Work* from a recognised university or equivalent, preferably with two years of work experience in the field of social work or equivalent.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose Bachelor's/Master's degrees are obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  2. A score of 537 (paper-based test) or 74 (Internet-based test) in TOEFL; or
  3. An equivalent score on a comparable test.

* Usually a good second class degree is required, but applicants with outstanding work experience may be considered.


Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education

Applicants should hold a recognised Bachelor’s degree. For part-time mode, preferences will be given to in-service kindergarten teachers.

Language requirements: An applicant seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 550 (PBT)/79 (IBT)^ or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (part-time mode)

Applicants seeking admission to the two-year part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent*; and
  2. A full-time local school teacher status**; and
  3. Proficiency in reading and writing of both Chinese and English as recognised by the Department.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s degrees were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

For applicants applying for the English specialising subject:

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

For applicants applying for non-English specialising subjects:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Reference will be made to communication skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation, specialism and teaching experience. Students may be provisionally accepted at the time of application, but they should have their full-time school teacher status confirmed before registration for the programme.

Applicants applying for Chinese or English courses may be required to sit for a language proficiency test.

* Applicants applying for Physical Education must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent majoring in PE or a relevant discipline.

** Applicants who do not have a full-time local school teacher status will be considered on a case-by-case basis and, if admitted, have to fulfil teaching practice requirements stipulated by the Department of Education Studies.


Postgraduate Diploma in Education (full-time mode)

Applicants seeking admission to the one-year full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent; and
  2. Demonstrated language proficiency in Chinese and English as recognised by the Department.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s degrees were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

Postgraduate Diploma in Education – Subject Teaching and Subject Knowledge Stream

Applicants seeking admission to the two-year part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education – Subject Teaching and Subject Knowledge Stream should possess:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent, and a postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent in a subject other than the specialising subject of the chosen stream; and
  2. A full-time school teacher status*.

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose bachelor’s degrees were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

For applicants applying for the English specialising subject:

  1. An overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

For applicants applying for non-English specialising subjects:

  1. An overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Reference will be made to communication skills and language proficiency in both Chinese and English. Maturity, motivation, specialism and teaching experience will also be taken into consideration.
